Why Chickens Won't Go Into the Coop at Night
- The first question isn't why — it's when. A flock that has never gone in willingly has a training or roost problem. A flock that used to go in and stopped almost always has something that changed inside the coop.
- For a sudden change, check the roosts after dark with a flashlight. Poultry red mites hide in the coop structure by day and feed at night, and Alabama Extension notes hens may stop sleeping on perches where they've been repeatedly bitten.
- Roost space and height are the most commonly under-provided things in a backyard coop. Ohio State Extension recommends at least 6–8 inches of roost per bird; birds instinctively want to sleep on the highest perch available, and if that's a fence rail, that's where they'll go.
- An automatic coop door will not make chickens go inside. It closes up after they do. Fix the cause first, then buy the door.
Standing in the yard at dusk trying to walk seven hens through a doorway they were using fine last week is a genuinely frustrating way to end a day — and it's a problem that gets solved much faster by diagnosing it than by chasing birds. Almost every case comes down to one of a short list of causes, and which list you should be reading depends entirely on whether this is new behavior or behavior they've always had.
Start here: never gone in, or recently stopped?
This single question splits the problem in half, and skipping it is why so much advice on this topic feels contradictory — half of it is written for one situation and half for the other.
If they have never reliably gone in, the coop has not yet become "home" in the way a chicken decides that, or the sleeping arrangements inside it aren't competitive with what's available outside. This is a training and habitat problem, and it's largely fixed by changing the coop, not the birds.
If they used to go in and stopped, something about the coop changed, and the birds are telling you about it. Chickens do not abandon a roost they were happy with for no reason. This version is a diagnosis problem, and the answer is usually physically present in the coop right now, waiting to be found.
A useful middle case: birds who walk up to the coop, look in, and turn around are giving you a much stronger signal than birds who simply never head that direction. Approach-then-refuse points hard at something unpleasant inside.
If they have never gone in willingly
They don't know it's home yet. The standard fix is confinement: shut the flock in the coop and attached run for two to three days so they learn where they live, then release them in the late afternoon so their first evening out ends with a short trip back to a place they now recognise. This is long-standing keeper practice rather than an extension-published protocol, so treat the two-to-three-day figure as a convention rather than a researched number. Birds moved from an established coop elsewhere generally take longer than young birds who have known nowhere else.
There's a better perch outside. Chickens choose height. The instinct is consistently described across hatchery and keeper guidance: at dusk a chicken looks for the highest place it can reach to spend the night, because height is what makes a roosting bird feel safe from ground predators — and where the coop offers nothing comfortable, birds will take an outdoor perch instead. If the coop's roost sits lower than the fence rail, the run frame, or a low branch, the birds aren't being difficult — they're picking the higher option, exactly as they're built to.
The coop is a dark hole. Chickens have poor night vision and will hesitate at a black doorway. If the coop interior is dramatically darker than the yard at the hour they're deciding, that alone can stall them at the threshold. Keepers commonly solve this with a low-level light inside on a timer for the transition period, removed once the habit forms.
Nothing about it is comfortable. Roosts that are too thin, too slick, or too crowded make the coop a worse place to sleep than a fence. Ohio State University Extension recommends roosts 1½ to 3 inches in diameter — wide enough for a bird to rest with its feet flat and covered by its body, which is the position that keeps toes from freezing in winter.
If they used to go in and stopped
Poultry red mites — check this first. This is the highest-value thing on the page, because it's both very common and almost impossible to find if you look at the wrong time of day. Poultry red mites don't live on the birds. Per the eXtension small-flock guidance, they spend daylight hours in dark cracks and crevices in roosts, walls, ceilings, and floors, and are nocturnal, coming out at night to feed on the birds. Alabama Cooperative Extension is explicit about the behavioral consequence: hens may no longer sleep on perches where they have been repeatedly bitten, and in severe infestations birds may spend more than half the night feather-pecking rather than sleeping.
That combination is why a daytime inspection turns up nothing and the flock still won't go in. Go out well after dark with a flashlight and look at the underside of the roost bars and into the joint where the roost meets the wall. This is also the one cause on this list where the birds' judgment is straightforwardly correct — the coop genuinely is the problem, and re-training them into it without treating the infestation is asking them to go back to being bitten. Treatment is worth a conversation with a vet or your local extension office rather than a guess: because these mites live in the structure rather than on the birds, treating the coop itself matters as much as treating the flock, and repeat treatment timing is something the extension guidance is specific about and general advice usually isn't.
Worth keeping straight: the northern fowl mite is a different parasite that lives on the bird full-time, day and night. If you find mites on birds during the day, you're looking at a different problem with a different treatment, not red mites.
Ammonia. A coop that smells sharp at bird height is a coop the birds have good reason to avoid, and ammonia sits low where they actually sleep and breathe. Overcrowding. A coop that was comfortable at four birds may not be at nine, and the flock will vote with their feet. The eXtension space-allowance guidance for small and backyard flocks gives a minimum of 3–4 square feet per hen indoors, plus about 10 square feet per hen outdoors, and notes that where climate limits year-round outdoor use, the indoor requirement goes up. Crowding also concentrates every other problem on this list — moisture, ammonia, parasites, and bullying all get worse in the same square footage.
Bullying. If it's one bird sleeping out and the rest go in fine, this is the likeliest answer. A bird low in the pecking order that gets driven off the roost will find somewhere else to sleep rather than keep losing the argument. Watch the roost at dusk for a few minutes rather than inferring it — the behavior is usually obvious once you're looking for it. More roost length and a second, separate perch at a different height both help, because they give a bullied bird somewhere to be that isn't contested.
A predator scare. A flock frightened at the coop can associate the coop itself with the event, and there doesn't need to have been a loss for that to stick — a raccoon working at the wire is enough. This one deserves urgency, because the birds' response to being frightened is to sleep somewhere with even less protection. A broody hen. A hen sitting on eggs isn't refusing the coop, she's refusing the roost, and she'll usually be in a nest box rather than outside. That's a different situation with a different answer, and it resolves itself.
The season changed. Dusk arrives markedly earlier in autumn than in summer, and a flock that seems to be going in "late" may simply be going in at the same light level as always while your sense of the hour hasn't moved. The roost is the variable people check last
Most of the causes above eventually route back to the roost, and it's worth measuring rather than eyeballing.
Ohio State University Extension's backyard flock guidance recommends at least 6–8 inches of roost space per chicken, on bars 1½ to 3 inches in diameter. Other sources go somewhat higher on space — 8–10 inches per bird is commonly recommended, and 10–12 for large dual-purpose breeds — so treat 6–8 inches as a floor rather than a target, particularly for heavier birds.
Three practical points that follow from that:
- Total roost length is the number that matters, not roost count. Nine hens at 8 inches each need six feet of bar, whether that's one long roost or two shorter ones.
- Height beats everything. If a bird can get higher outside than inside, no amount of training reliably competes with the instinct. Raising the interior roost is often a more effective fix than anything you do to the birds.
- Give a second, lower perch. It gives lower-ranked birds a place to sleep that isn't the contested top spot, and it gives heavier or older birds a step rather than a jump.
Why an automatic door is not the fix for this
It's worth being blunt about this, because the search for "chickens won't go in the coop" leads to a lot of pages that answer it by selling a door.
An automatic coop door closes an opening on a timer or a light reading. It has no mechanism for moving a bird, no way to know whether the flock is inside, and no judgment about whether closing now is a good idea. If your birds aren't going in on their own, a door doesn't change that — and a door that closes on schedule while three hens are still on the fence rail has actively made things worse, because now they're shut out for the night against a door they can't open.
The honest sequence is the other way round: fix the reason they're staying out, confirm they're putting themselves to bed reliably, and then buy a door to close up after them. That's the job an automatic door is genuinely excellent at, and it's a real one — it closes the pop-hole at dusk every night whether or not you're home, which is the single window most predator-loss accounts turn on.

A ten-minute diagnostic walkthrough
Do this once, at dusk and then again after full dark, and you'll usually have your answer.
1 Watch the last fifteen minutes of daylight
Stand back and note which birds stay out and what they do. All of them ignoring the coop, one bird excluded at the door, or several walking up and turning around are three different diagnoses.
2 Smell the coop at bird height
Not standing in the doorway — crouch to where they sleep. Sharp ammonia at roost level is a finding, and it's actionable the same day with fresh bedding and more ventilation.
3 Measure the roost
Total usable bar length divided by number of birds. Under 6 inches each and you've found a contributing cause regardless of what else is going on.
4 Compare heights
Interior roost versus the highest thing they can reach outside. If outside wins, that's very likely the whole story.
5 Come back after dark with a flashlight
Underside of the roost bars, and the crevices where roost meets wall. This is the only time red mites are findable, and it's the check most people never make.

My chickens suddenly stopped going into the coop — what should I check first?
Go out after full dark with a flashlight and look at the underside of the roosting bars and into the cracks where the roost meets the wall. No, and this is the single most common misunderstanding about what these doors do. An automatic door closes an opening on a schedule or a light reading — it has no way to move a bird. If your flock isn't going in on its own, adding a door doesn't solve that; at best it does nothing, and at worst it closes with birds still outside, which leaves them shut out and exposed all night. Fix the reason the coop is unattractive first. A door is the right purchase once the flock reliably puts itself to bed and the job left is closing up after them.
Could a predator be the reason, even if I haven't lost any birds?
Yes. A flock that has been frightened at the coop — by a raccoon working at the wire, a rat moving through the bedding, or a predator that got in and left without a kill — can associate the coop itself with the scare and refuse to go back in. You often see this as birds who will go partway and then turn around, rather than birds who ignore the coop entirely. Because the birds are then sleeping outside and unprotected, this is the version of the problem with the shortest safe timeline: it's worth a full inspection of the coop's wire, latches, and ground line the same week it starts.
Is it actually dangerous to let them roost outside?
Yes, and it's the reason this is worth fixing quickly rather than living with. A bird on an outdoor perch is available to everything the coop exists to exclude — raccoons, foxes, owls at night, and anything that climbs. Roosting outside also removes whatever weather protection the coop provides, which matters much more in wet and cold conditions than in mild ones. Treat outdoor roosting as a temporary situation to diagnose, not a preference to accommodate.
