How to Winterize a Chicken Coop: An Autumn Checklist
- Do this in early autumn. Several of these jobs become impossible once the ground freezes, and the list below is ordered accordingly.
- The most important step is the one most people get backwards: open the ventilation, don't seal it. More flocks are harmed by damp, sealed coops than by cold ones.
- Autumn is when predator pressure rises — young foxes and raccoons disperse from September onward and are feeding hard before winter. The perimeter check belongs now, not in spring.
- Water is the chore that will actually define your winter. Decide how you're solving it before it's frozen, not during the first cold snap.
- Skip the popular steps that don't hold up: heat lamps, wrapping the coop airtight, and chicken sweaters.
Most winterizing guides are a pile of tips in no particular order. This one is sequenced around a practical constraint: several of these jobs stop being possible once the ground freezes and the daytime highs stay below freezing. Do those first, and the rest can happen at leisure.
The other thing worth saying up front is that the headline advice in this genre is frequently wrong. The instinct to wrap the coop up tight is the single most common cause of the winter problems people are trying to prevent — so the first item on this list is about opening things, not closing them.
Do this in autumn, not in December
Six weeks ahead of your first hard freeze is a reasonable target. The jobs with a hard deadline:
- Anything that involves digging. A buried predator apron, a water line, or a compost-heated sunken waterer all need workable ground.
- A full bedding clear-out. You want the coop floor dry before you build up winter bedding on top of it, and drying needs above-freezing air.
- Structural repairs. Roof patches, board replacement, and sealant all behave badly in the cold, and a leak you don't fix in October becomes an ice problem in January.
- Anything requiring a supplier. Heated waterers, hardware cloth, and bulbs are all things people discover they need on the coldest night of the year.
There's also a seasonal reason not to wait, and it's one most winterizing guides miss entirely: autumn is a high-predator-pressure season. Fox pups disperse from around mid-September through December, and young raccoons are feeding hard to build fat before winter. You have more inexperienced, hungry predators moving through unfamiliar territory in autumn than at almost any other time. The perimeter check below is not a spring job.
The checklist
Audit the ventilation — and open it up
This is first because it's the highest-consequence item and the one most likely to be done backwards.
Chickens put a lot of water into their coop air: through breathing, through droppings — fresh poultry manure runs at about 75 percent moisture content — and through evaporation from waterers. In a coop with real airflow that moisture leaves. In a sealed coop it condenses on the coldest surfaces available — including the birds' combs, which is how frostbite happens. What to actually do:
- Find every vent and make sure it's open and unobstructed. If you closed vents last autumn, open them.
- Check that the openings are high — at or near the roof line, above roost height. That's where warm, moist air collects.
- Separately, find and block gaps at roost height, which are drafts rather than ventilation.
- Cover every opening with ½" hardware cloth, not chicken wire.

Clear out, dry down, and rebuild the bedding
Strip the old bedding entirely, scrape the floor, and let it dry properly before rebuilding. Starting winter on top of damp summer litter means starting winter with an ammonia problem.
Then build depth. Extension poultry veterinarian Dustan Clark notes that wood shavings 4–8 inches deep in the poultry house will provide some insulation, and depth also buffers moisture. The caveat matters as much as the number: this only works while the bedding stays dry. Deep bedding that's allowed to go damp is worse than shallow bedding, not better — so plan on turning it and topping it up through the winter rather than piling it up once in October and forgetting it.
Pay particular attention to the strip directly under the roost, which collects the overnight droppings and is where most of the moisture and ammonia originates.
Solve water before it's frozen
This is the chore that will define your winter, and it's worth deciding deliberately rather than improvising in January.
Ohio State University Extension's baseline is to change the water twice per day, and more often on colder days to prevent freezing. That's the fallback that always works and the honest default if you have no power at the coop.
Your three realistic options:

- No power at the coop. Passive methods buy hours rather than eliminating the problem, and a couple of the most-repeated tricks don't survive testing. - Twice-daily swaps. Two identical rubber containers, one thawing indoors while the other is out. Unglamorous, unbeatable, and free.
One winterizing note that connects back to step 1: an open waterer inside a closed coop is a humidifier. If the water can live in the run or a covered outdoor spot, coop air gets drier for free.
Re-check the perimeter for predators
Autumn is the wrong season to skip this, for the dispersal reasons above. Worth checking specifically:
- Every new vent is a new opening. Anything you cut in step 1 needs ½" hardware cloth, properly fastened — screws and washers, not staples.
- Chicken wire is not predator-proof. It keeps chickens in; it does not keep raccoons out.
- Latches. Raccoons are genuinely good at simple latches. Anything a hand can open one-handed, they can eventually open too.
- The ground line. Digging predators go under, and this is your last chance to bury an apron before the ground hardens.
- Deciduous cover is about to disappear. Summer foliage that screened the run from hawks won't be there in November.

Check the roosts
Two specifics from extension guidance, both easy to get wrong:
- Material. Use wood. University of Arkansas extension instructor Andrew Bolton advises staying away from material that will retain the cold, like metal and plastic, as these could cause frostbite.
- Dimensions. Ohio State recommends at least 6–8 inches of roost space per chicken, with roosts 1½ to 3 inches in diameter. In cold climates many keepers deliberately go to the wide end of that — commonly a 2×4 mounted flat side up — on the reasoning that a bird settled on a wide flat perch can cover her toes with her body and breast feathers. Her feet are then inside her own insulation rather than gripping a narrow bar in open air. It's a sensible frostbite defense, and it costs nothing to build that way.

Adjust feed, and account for the molt
Feed intake rises in cold weather, because digestion is where the heat comes from. Ohio State's figures: each laying chicken requires 2 pounds of feed per week, on a pellet or crumble containing 14–17 percent crude protein during winter.
Autumn is also molt season for most flocks, which overlaps this step. Birds regrowing a full set of feathers divert a lot of protein into that job, which is why laying drops off during a molt. Make sure feed stays dry and that rodents aren't getting into it; autumn is when rodents move toward buildings.
Decide the light question deliberately
Hens slow or stop laying as daylight shortens. You can accept that or intervene, and both are defensible.
If you intervene, Ohio State's guidance is 12–14 hours of light, using a 60-watt incandescent, 13-watt compact fluorescent, or comparable LED bulb hung at approximately 7 feet with a downward reflector.
Two practical notes worth adding: put supplemental light on a timer at the morning end rather than the evening, so birds are never caught off the roost when it cuts out abruptly; and treat any bulb and cord in a bedding-filled coop as a real fire risk, wired accordingly.
Plenty of experienced keepers deliberately skip this and let the flock rest through the dark months. That's a legitimate choice, not neglect.
Sort out the run, not just the coop
A run that becomes unusable in winter pushes the whole flock indoors all day, which drives coop humidity straight up — so run improvements are ventilation improvements by another route.
- A windbreak on the prevailing side: tarp, straw bales, or clear panels on the exposed face.
- Overhead cover on at least part of it, to keep an area free of snow and freezing rain.
- Drainage, so it doesn't become standing mud. Wet birds lose their insulation entirely.
- A deep dry litter layer over part of the run gives the birds somewhere to stand that isn't frozen ground.
One quirk worth planning for: most chickens flatly refuse to walk on snow. It's not a hardiness problem — a flock that would happily forage at 20°F on bare ground will stand at the pop door and decline to step onto fresh snow. Left alone they'll simply stay in all day, and a coop full of birds all day is a coop with a humidity problem.
The fix is trivial and works reliably: shovel a path and lay straw, leaves, or shavings over the snow so there's something dry and not-cold underfoot. A little scratch grain scattered along it gets the first birds moving, and the rest follow.
Make the pop door reliable
The pop door is the one moving part that has to work every day in the worst conditions of the year. Winter is when both manual and automatic doors fail: ice in the track, a frozen mechanism, batteries dying faster in the cold, a solar panel buried under snow.
Check the track is clear and the door seats properly, and if it's automatic, confirm you know how to operate it manually before you need to at −5°F in the dark. Make the heat decision — probably "no"
Ohio State's position: cold-tolerant breeds acclimated to the weather, living in an insulated, dry coop with adequate ventilation, do not usually need supplemental heat.
Most backyard flocks in most US climates don't need heat, and adding it carries real costs — fire risk, loss of acclimation, and worse air quality, since heat is one of the drivers of ammonia production. What to skip
Some standard advice in this genre is worth actively not doing.
Don't seal the coop airtight. Covered at length above, but it bears repeating as the headline mistake. University of Georgia extension opens its winter bulletin describing exactly this: people building insulated, fairly airtight backyard housing so that less fresh air comes in and less air laden with ammonia and moisture leaks out.
Don't default to a heat lamp. Clamp lamps with exposed bulbs get knocked into bedding, cheap clamps let go, and straw is highly combustible — in one demonstration a heat lamp bulb ignited straw within a minute. The Maine Fire Marshal's office names heat lamps as the most dangerous of the common coop fire causes. If you need heat, a mounted flat panel is a fundamentally safer design.
Don't run a household extension cord out to the coop as a permanent installation. Extension cords are named alongside heat lamps, bedding, and water heaters among the top fire risks in a coop, and they're especially hazardous run under boards or directly over straw where they can kink or split.
Don't put sweaters on your chickens. Feathers work by trapping an adjustable layer of air; a garment over the top flattens them, holds moisture against the skin, and interferes with preening.
Don't rely on petroleum jelly as your frostbite plan. This one is genuinely contested rather than simply wrong. The case for it is that it slows evaporative cooling right around freezing. The case against is more persuasive: a Kansas State University expert has pushed back on the widespread claim that it insulates — it doesn't — and it freezes itself once temperatures drop far enough, which is exactly when you needed it. It can also trap moisture against the skin and collect dust and bedding. Treat it as a marginal measure for a mild freeze, not a plan. A realistic winter routine
Once the autumn work is done, the ongoing job is small:
- Twice daily: check water is liquid; swap or refill as needed.
- Daily: a look at the flock on the roost — anyone hunched, isolated, or off. Check combs for pale or darkening tips.
- Daily: clear droppings from under the roost if you can. This is the highest-moisture spot in the coop.
- Weekly: turn and top up bedding; check it's still dry and loose.
- Weekly: put your head down at roost level and smell for ammonia. If you can smell it, act on it.
- After every storm: check vents aren't blocked by snow, the run cover hasn't collapsed, and any solar panel is clear.
