Know your predator: how each one actually attacks

The five layers of defense

2 Buried or aproned hardware cloth, not just a fence
A fence that stops at ground level is an invitation to dig under. 3 Welded hardware cloth, everywhere — not chicken wire
This is the single highest-leverage material swap in predator-proofing. Chicken wire's job is containment, not exclusion — its thin, twisted-hex construction can be torn or bitten through, and its typical opening size is large enough for a raccoon to reach through. 4 Locking latches, not hooks

5 Overhead cover for aerial predators
If your run is open on top, it's exposed to hawks and owls regardless of how solid the fencing is. Hardware cloth panels across the top, solid roofing, or a fully enclosed run design are the only measures that actually address this — netting alone can sag and create gaps, and is a weaker option than rigid mesh or roofing where hawk pressure is high in your area.
A few extra measures worth adding
These don't replace the five layers above, but they're cheap, well-sourced additions that address gaps the core framework doesn't:
- Raise the coop off the ground by about a foot. It discourages rats, skunks, and snakes from nesting or denning underneath, where they can work toward eggs or chicks undisturbed.
- Mind the landscaping around the run. Predators generally avoid crossing open, exposed ground — keeping a clear perimeter around the run (rather than letting brush or tall grass grow right up to the fence line) removes the cover a predator would otherwise use to approach unseen.
- Add a nighttime deterrent light. - Collect eggs daily. Eggs left in the coop are their own predator attractant, independent of how secure the structure is.
Common mistakes that undo all of the above
- Leaving the pop-hole open past dusk. This is the single most common failure point in predator-loss accounts, and it's exactly the window automatic doors and reliable routines exist to close. - Weak latches, especially at eye level for a raccoon. If a curious raccoon can manipulate it with a paw through the wire, it's not secure.
